Winning the battle inside your mind Print E-mail
By Marlon Skyers  »  When life has me with my back against the ropes, the only thing I can do is shut my eyes and rely on faith to help me fight through. While that might have been in a figurative sense, there are many people today who turn to various types of fight training – not so much to help them win physical battles, but to grow stronger mentally, to become more self-reliant and confident.

So it was that I sought out the guidance of trainer and manager of HUF Boxing Olga Rosa Heron. I put Olga through a couple of rounds of questioning.

How does fight training boost confidence?

I’ve observed a radiant effect on people, not just after a fight but even in training. They are smiling more and are happier after they beat the bag. Boxing really teaches us about ourselves. The physical change in one’s body type happens as the journey is walked; and the character concluded is one of perseverance, hope and a strong athletic physique.

Can anybody pick this up?

Anybody can pick this up; we’ve had experience working with deaf, blind, and physically challenged people (in a wheelchair).

What are the age ranges of people who come here for training?

My niece, Faith started slipping punches in at the tender age of 2. We start our Young Heroes program at 7 or 8 years old.

Who are some of your greatest client success stories?

Well there’s people like Samantha Lopes, who lost 50 lbs in 10 months, but the success is really seeing their quality of life change. In my own journey the success of not having to go through knee surgery on both my knees, and turning away from a lifestyle of partying, drugs, and suicide and turning to one of hope, faith, and love is success on its own at HUF. We also have several different weight-class champions that coach and teach here as well.

I tend to go overboard when it comes to starting a new routine, but then I quickly get discouraged when I don’t see results. What advice would you give people to keep going after they plateau?

Plateaus are a good time to assess and enjoy your view. It’s important to get involved in a program that will keep you mentally and physically stimulated.

When is the next big event?

On December 1 we will host a live amateur boxing show, “Trials and Temptations”. Proceeds of the show will be donated to George Chuvalo’s Fight Against Drugs.

You’ve survived a lot, above all, my rounds of questions. When can I start my training?

Come to the King of Kings workout Friday nights at 8pm with HUF’s head coach, Andrew Heron, as well as some of the young gladiators, I’ll see you there.
